Sana Packaging, a sustainable packaging brand that designs and develops cannabis packaging for a circular economy, has launched what it says is the cannabis industry’s first reclaimed ocean plastic jar: the Sana Ocean Jar 4.

“We’re really excited about the Sana Ocean Jar 4,” says Ron Basak-Smith, co-founder and CEO. “It’s our first 100% reclaimed ocean plastic jar and the first jar we’re producing in-house. And while the Sana Ocean Jar 4 was designed to be used in conjunction with the Sana Ocean Screw-Top Lid, it’s compatible with all 53-400 closures.”

The new Sana Ocean Ocean Jar 4 is certified child-resistant, made in the USA, number 2 recyclable, holds a 4-oz volume, fits up to seven grams of flower, and is ideally suited for flower, edibles, and topicals. Sana Packaging offers custom printing and labeling, and these products are available now for pre-order.

Sana Packaging aims to transition cannabis packaging away from a linear “take-make-dispose” economic model and toward a circular economic model meant to eliminate waste and pollution, keep products and materials in use, and regenerate our natural systems. Sana Packaging is normalizing the concept of a circular economy and is accounting for the negative externalities of packaging waste, so that it can serve as an example of the ways businesses can drive positive change.

“With the help of our incredible customers, Sana Packaging has already removed more than 58 tons (116,000 pounds) of plastic waste from our oceans. For reference, the average car weighs about two tons, or 4,000 pounds,” notes Basak-Smith.

The company also recently unveiled its third 100% reclaimed ocean plastic pre-roll tube: the Sana Ocean Tube 116. The new Sana Ocean Tube 116 is also fully recyclable, child-resistant certified, features a new pop-top design, and is suitable for king-size pre-rolls, blunts, and vape pens. Like the Sana Ocean Ocean Jar 4, these are available now for pre-order.

“We’re really excited about the Sana Ocean Tube 116,” notes Basak-Smith. “Pop-top pre-roll tubes have long been the industry standard, and we’re redefining that standard by using 100% reclaimed ocean plastic. Compared to our previous pre-roll tube designs, we were able to reduce our material use by 25% and provide our customers with a 30% cost savings.”

Sana Packaging has partnered with Oceanworks to source 100% of the reclaimed ocean plastic that is being utilized in the company’s newest products. The reclaimed ocean plastic has been sorted so it’s 100% HDPE.

According to Basak-Smith, Sana Packaging is proud to be a “Made in the USA” company and believes packaging should be regenerative and help heal the environment throughout its
lifecycle. Hemp plays a big role, too. With its rapid growth cycle, hardiness, and versatility, hemp is an ideal feedstock for bioplastic packaging.

According to Sana Packaging, hemp requires less water than other industrial crops and none of the pesticides. One metric ton of hemp sequesters 1.5 metric tons of carbon.
